Sheriff Warns About Phony Car Crash Scam

The Carteret County Sheriff's Office is warning people about phone calls from scam artists to trick you into wiring money to who you believe is a relative in trouble.

The caller says a relative of yours has been in a car accident in Canada, and they need money to be wired right away. The caller says the money will pay for your relative's legal and court fees. They may try to make the claim sound more legitimate by using names of judges.

Lawmen say this is a scam. Do not give them your credit card information wire them any money. They say many of the scammers are outside of the U.S., making prosecution impossible, as is getting your money back.
