A New River Marine is facing charges for crashing into a school bus head-on.
Troopers say Michael Valderrama was charged with careless and reckless driving and driving left of center for the crash with a Southwest Onslow High School bus Tuesday morning. Valderrama told troopers he fell asleep just before crashing into the bus. Valderrama's Nissan XTerra crashed into bus #28 on Old Maplehurst Rd. at 7 a.m.
Valderrama was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. He was suffering from a broken leg and a broken ankle.
Six students suffered minor injuries, and school officials say they were taken by their parents to be checked out.
The crash happened on Old Maplehurst Rd. at 7 a.m. Onslow County Schools says a vehicle hit bus #28 head-on. The bus was headed to Southwest Onslow High School.
The driver of the SUV was airlifted to the hospital. His condition is not known, according to school officials. They say he crossed into the path of the bus and collided with it head on.
A school spokeswoman says there were no major injuries among the students on board. Six were taken by their parents to be evaluated. There were a total of 26 students were on board.
