Sheriff’s officials say that 2 men have been charged, while a 3rd is on the run in connection with vehicle break-ins as well as an ATV theft.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says that between January 11th and February 4th of 2014, it began investigating several reports including vehicle break-ins, lawnmower thefts, and an ATV theft in the River Road area of Washington.
Investigators say they were able to identify a suspects and a vehicle used during those crimes. On February 10th, investigators with Beaufort County and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office performed a search of a property on Ormandsville Road in Ayden. There, officials say they found the suspect vehicle, along with a stolen ATV from Washington. Officials say 2 suspects were taken into custody after the search.
Investigators say an additional search of a home on Willow Green Road in Ayden produced 2 lawnmowers stolen from Washington.
Officials say the investigation revealed the suspects were stealing items in Washington between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. while performing contract newspaper delivery for a Greenville business.
We’re told that a delivery van was used to conceal and transport the stolen lawn mowers and ATV.
Officials have charged 30-year-old Melvin Edwards of Willow Green Road in Ayden with 2 counts of felony larceny, 2 counts of misdemeanor larceny, 1 count of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, 1 counts of unlawfully obtaining a financial card, 1 count of driving while license revoked, and 1 count of identity theft.
21-year-old Xavier Hall of Vaniford Road in Snow Hill has been charged with 1 count of felony larceny.
Lawmen say they are still searching for 21-year-old Cornelius Campbell of Barrett Drive in Ayden. Officials say that Campbell is facing 2 counts of felony larceny, 2 counts of misdemeanor larceny, 1 count of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, and 1 count of unlawfully obtaining a financial card.
Edwards was held on a $27,000 secured bond. Hall was held on a $4,000 secured bond.
Officials say additional charges are expected from Beaufort, Pitt, and Greene Counties.
