Roy Cooper, Other Lawyers Resolve Defamation Case

North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper has settled a longstanding case with a family of Raleigh lawyers who sued him for defamation in a television commercial he aired in his campaign for the job 14 years ago.

Cooper and a longtime aide signed an agreement released Thursday with Dan Boyce, his relatives and their law firm. The first of two scheduled civil trials in the matter was scheduled to begin later this month.

Boyce ran against Cooper for attorney general in 2000. Cooper's committee ran an ad about a 1990s class-action tax case against the state involving Boyce attorneys.

Cooper and the aide signed a statement calling the Boyce family lawyers "excellent and honorable people" and apologized for anything in the ad that implied otherwise.
