The National Weather Service is warning of rip currents and shore breaks along the northern end of the North Carolina coast.
Forecasters have issued a beach hazards statement for a moderate risk of rip currents from 8 p.m. Monday through Tuesday evening north of Cape Lookout. The weather service is also warning of a dangerous shore break through Tuesday evening north of Cape Hatteras.
The weather service said shore break occurs when waves break directly on the beach. Neck and back injuries are common with shore break.
Rip currents are potentially deadly channels of water that pull away from shore. Swimmers caught in them should swim parallel to shore until they escape, then swim in.
