Report: Policies Followed In Former Sheriff Death At Jail

An internal investigation finds that jailers at the New Hanover County jail followed proper policies and procedures when former Brunswick County Sheriff Ronald Hewett died earlier there this month.

New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon said Tuesday the internal investigation based on video recordings and interviews found jailers acted appropriately on July 12. McMahon said he will release the report once the State Bureau of Investigation probe into the death is completed.

Hewett was being held at the jail on a federal firearms charge.

McMahon has said Hewett was being taken from his cell for a visit with family members when there was an altercation. In a 911 call from the jail, the caller mentioned a patient with psychiatric or abnormal behavior or a possible suicide attempt.
