Hundreds gathered at the waters edge this weekend to say goodbye to two loggerhead turtles nursed back to health by the North Carolina Aquarium.
The Aquarium on Roanoke Island and the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles released the two turtles at the Nags Head town hall beach access Sunday.
Vortex, a 78 pound loggerhead, was being cared for at the Star Center after he was hit and injured by a boat.
He was released along with Heatwave, a 14 pound green sea turtle.
Both were fitted with satellite tracking devices before their release.
About 300 volunteers and visitors showed up to wish Vortex and Heatwave a safe journey.
