Record Number Expected For Krispy Kreme Challenge

Organizers of the Krispy Kreme Challenge hope to reach a milestone as the event approaches its ninth year.

A record-breaking 8,000 students, community members and supporters are expected to participate in Saturday's race in Raleigh. The event supports N.C. Children's Hospital.

The challenge hopes to surpass $500,000 in donations this year. Last year's challenge was the most successful to date, raising $127,000 to bring total donations to $374,000 over eight years. A check presentation prior to the race will feature one of the hospital's patient families and chief of pediatrics Dr. Wesley Burks.

Burks will join the race, in which participants must run 2.5 miles to the downtown Raleigh Krispy Kreme store, eat a dozen doughnuts, and run 2.5 miles back to the N.C. State Belltower in under an hour.
