A proposal to widen Evans St. in Greenville and Old Tar Rd. in Winterville should help the flow of traffic on that busy road. The project would require right of way acquisition, which means property is currently in the way of the proposed road.
The N.C. Department of Transportation wants to widen 3.8-mile section from Cooper Street/Worthington Road to Greenville Boulevard. The state says this will provide additional capacity and improve traffic flow and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. The existing two-lanes will be widened to four 12-foot lanes with a 23-foot median, curb and gutter, sidewalks, and possibly bicycle lanes.
The project is currently scheduled for right of way acquisition in 2018 and construction in 2020.
A public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Pitt County Shrine Club, 569 Irish Lane in Winterville. There is no formal presentation, so people can come and go as they wish.
