UPDATE: Power Restored In Most Areas

Thousands of Progress Energy customers lost power for about 90 minutes overnight; it was restored in most areas around 2:30 a.m.

Greene County officials say a problem with a substation caused the outage.

Dispatchers with the Greene County sheriff's office said a transformer caught fire on Gray Turnage Road early Tuesday morning.

We're gathering details on a power outage in the east. Over 7,000 Progress Energy customers are currently without power.

The outage is spread across Greene, Lenoir and Pitt Counties; the biggest outages are in the areas of Snow Hill and Institute, south Ayden and Grifton, and north of Kinston.

Greene County officials say a problem with a substation is causing the outage, but couldn't give any further details.

Reports of power outages began around 1:00 a.m. At last check, Progress Energy says power should be restored at 2:30 a.m.
