A new statewide poll shows most people in North Carolina favor some type of gun control.

Elon University released its poll on Monday saying 93% of those surveyed endorse background checks for everyone buying a gun, while 56% favor banning the sale of semi-automatic assault rifles.

The university interviewed 891 people last week in the telephone poll, which has a margin of error or 3.28%.

Elon says the poll also found 55% of those questioned favor limiting the number of rounds in clips or magazines, while 83% want a waiting period before people can buy a handgun.

The university says while the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting has influenced gun control attitudes, some gun control measures haven't changed much since their last poll on the subject nearly 3 years ago.
