Pitt County Schools Preparing For Job Cuts

The Pitt County School system says the new state budget could results in the elimination of 270 school jobs.

Pitt County Schools says almost half of the layoffs will be teachers if they are forced to cut jobs.

The school system had estimated a 15 percent budget cut by the state for the upcoming fiscal year. That cut would eliminate 116 teacher across Pitt County.

Superintendent Dr. Beverly Reep proposed a termination plan based on performance, which was voted down by one vote from the school board Monday night. Now Reep will have to adjust the plan to also include administration as well as teachers.

The plan is something Dr. Reep says they hope they will not have to use but need to be prepared.

Dr. Reep will revise the plan and then present it to the board for a vote again at their meeting in May.
