A Pitt County man is charged with assaulting his estranged girlfriend and then barricading himself inside her home for hours.
Pitt County deputies say 50-year-old Clay Witte of Farmville, beat his girlfriend at her home in Fountain Sunday night, but Pitt County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Christy Wallace says she managed to escape to a neighbor's home and call for help.
Wallace says they got the call around 9:45 P.M. and when they arrived, Witte got into his truck and tried to get away, but then circled back around to the home and crashed in the ditch outside the home on Highway 222.
Wallace says he then ran inside his girlfriend's house and barricaded himself inside.
Wallace says crisis negotiators were called in to get him out of the house.
By 3:30 Monday morning, Witte surrendered and deputies said he had at least 4 guns on him.
Witte is in the Pitt County Detention Center charged with assault and failure to heed a siren or lights.
His bond is $30,000.
