Pitt County Economic Forecast: Manufacturing Jobs Are Growing

The Pitt-Greenville Chamber of Commerce 2014 economic forecast has some mixed news.

The event was held Tuesday at the the City Hotel and Bistro in Greenville.

East Carolina Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Dr. Rick Niswander served as guest speaker.

He says while unemployment numbers are down nationwide -- he predicts the North Carolina's unemployment rate will remain above the national average and should be between 6 and 6.5 percent by the end of the year.

Niswander did say there's good news for Pitt County. He says, "Our manufacturing jobs are growing. The Greenville metropolitan area is the only one in the state of North Carolina that has more manufacturing jobs now than when the recession started. The only one."

Even though North Carolina saw a one-percent increase in jobs from the year 2000 through 2012, Nisewander says the state also experienced a 6 percent decrease in overall weekly wages.
