Pitt County Deputies First In State To Carry Opiod Overdose Medicine

Deputies in one Eastern Carolina county are now the first to carry a lifesaving medicine in case of drug overdoses.

It's called the Narcan Initiative, and Pitt County deputies say they're the first in the state to have it.

Nalozone is administered through the nose, and is used to temporary reverse an overdose of Codeine, hydrocodone, oxydodone, OxyContin or Percocet.

With deputies often the first responders to medical calls involving overdoses, all sworn officers will carry the nasal Narcan in their patrol cars.

Doctors say Narcan is very safe, and is only effective on those in an opiod overdose.
