VA Tech Holds On To Give Pirates First Loss Of The Season

Logan Thomas threw two touchdown passes and Virginia Tech turned in a dominating defensive performance to beat East Carolina 15-10 on Saturday.

Thomas' second TD toss, a 3-yard score to D.J. Coles with 4:09 left in the third quarter, put the Hokies (2-1) ahead to stay.

The Pirates (2-1) had their own chance for a go-ahead drive, getting the ball back at their own 10 with 2:04 left. But the Hokies sacked Carden on first down, then James Gayle stripped Carden from behind in the end zone for a safety that essentially sealed the win.

Virginia Tech had seven sacks, 11 tackles for loss and three interceptions. The Hokies also held the Pirates to a meager 3-for-11 third-down conversion rate.

Virginia Tech needed every bit of that production, too. Its offense had to grind out tough yards all day, while Cody Journell missed two field goals and an extra point.

The ECU football team will welcome ACC powerhouse Virginia Tech into Dowdy-Ficklen stadium Saturday at high noon.

Although East Carolina heads into the game with a 2-0 record... the Pirates are a seven point underdog on their home field. East Carolina players know they will have to play very well to beat the Hokies... and it all starts with taking a look at their own team.

And as always -- the Greenville Police Department and the Highway Patrol want area drivers to be aware of game day traffic.

ECU parking lots will open at 8:00 a-m Saturday ahead of the 12-noon kickoff. Traffic is expected to be extremely heavy around the stadium particularly on Charles Boulevard and E. 14th Street.

If you're not going to the game -- you are advised to avoid the the roads near the stadium. The Greenville Police Department will not allow any traffic on 14th Street from Elm Street and east on 14th Street from West Rock Springs Road without a visible parking or access pass. The closing will take affect at 9 a-m and until about one and a half hours after the game is over.
