Overturned Pickup Driver Facing Drug, DWI Charges

The driver of an overturned pickup truck is facing drug charges after lawmen say they found controlled substances in and around his vehicle.

The accident happened last night around 7:20 p.m. on Highway 33 near Dixon Road, east of Chocowinity. Deputies say they found some four ounces of marijuana, nine Oxycodone pills and assorted drug paraphernalia around the crash site.

In addition to a DWI charge by state troopers, William Jefferson, Jr. has been charged by deputies with trafficking opium or heroin, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, felony possession of marijuana, maintaining a vehicle for keeping and selling a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The 54-year-old Jefferson was jailed on a $29,000 secured bond.

Beaufort County emergency crews were on the scene of a single vehicle accident where a pickup truck ended up on its side in the woods.

The accident happened just after 7:00 p.m. on Highway 33 east in Beaufort County near the intersection with Boyd Drive and is causing traffic delays on that stretch of roadway.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and Chocowinity Fire Department were on the scene directing traffic.

Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and says there were no injuries.
