Police said a black bear is taking in the sites around a town with its likeness at every corner.
New Bern Police tell WITN they first got the call of a reported black bear sighting near Union Point Park around 10:55 p.m. on Monday night.
The bear was tracked from the park to the District Attorney's office along Broad Street, to Middle Street, and spotted again along Broad Street around 11:05 p.m.
By 2:30 a.m., police said someone else spotted the black bear near the Craven Terrace area.
Police said the bear showed no signs of aggression and is likely just searching for food.
Officers warned if you see the bear, do not approach it. You are advised to call police and keep your distance.
The City of New Bern was named by Swiss Baron Christoph De Graffenried for his hometown of Bern, Switzerland.
A black bear was on the first flag presented to the city by officials of Bern, and has since become a symbol for the city, according to the city's historical website.
