UPDATE: Onslow Schools Make Redistricting Decision

The Onslow County School Board made a surprising decision on redistricting; they opted not to redistrict at all, for now.

The board was scheduled vote on which of their nine redistricting options they wanted to enact last night. Instead, the board decided they will not change the attendance zones for the 2012-2013 school year.

It's not clear when Onslow County Schools will take up the redistricting issue again. A handful of schools are overcrowded now or are projected to be too crowded in the near future. For example, officials say Richlands High School has 210 students overcapacity.

By the numbers--Onslow County Schools says Richlands High School is the most problematic. Officials say they have 210 more students than they can properly educate.

Steve Myers with Onslow County Schools says, "We know it's very important that every child has an equal opportunity to receive an excellent education, unfortunately, we're addressing the immediate need."

Parent Amanda Clark says, "We've lived here all our lives and newcomers are coming in and takin' my kids' spots."

The school board met Tuesday night to hear concerns.
