Animal control officers say a Marine shot and killed a neighbor's dog Monday night.

A news release says deputies received the call around 6:20 p.m. that the dog had been shot on Belgrade-Swansboro Road, south of Maysville. Deputies say the dog, which they describe as a retriever, died at the scene.

Animal Control Director Alan Davis says the dog was owned by Geneva Sumner and their investigation shows the animal was shot by a neighbor who is a U.S. Marine.

Davis says there was a report the dog was acting aggressive, but no charges have been brought in the case.

Deputies are being assisted by Onslow County Animal Control.
