The Onslow County commissioners say three open and closed landfills soon will be home to 6,000 solar panels that will produce electricity to power 2,400 homes.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported (http://bit.ly/1dZ1ILK) the county and Onslow Power Producers recently installed landfill gas-to-energy system, which uses landfill gas to create electricity from the active landfill and two closed landfills.

Onslow officials say the county will receive profit-sharing payments from Onslow Power Producers, which is funding the project. The county will also receive a license fee of $10,000 for each solar site.

Onslow County's solid waste director expects the project to produce between $50,000 and $100,000 in revenue for the county.
