Onslow County Middle Schoolers Prepare For Math Competition

60 Onslow County middle school math whizzes grabbed their calculators and their pencils Friday morning to compete in Mathcounts. Its a national coaching and competition program to get 7th and 8th graders excited for math. The mathletes competed as teams and as individuals.

"Science is fun. Math is fun. Reading is fun, but what are we doing with it? How are we making it fun? Mathcounts is a fun event for a child to say, 'Look, this is what I can do. I can problem solve. I'm a problem solver. I'm going to solve our problems." And that's what they do in mathcounts," said Michele Halley with Onslow County Schools

Friday's competition was getting students ready for regionals next weekend in Wilmington. Those winners go to the state contest in March. The top four scorers at state will represent North Carolina at the national finals.
