A detour on a major highway in Beaufort County is causing problems for nearby residents.
Bridge construction on Highway 33 in Chocowinity began in February 2013. Almost a year later, drivers are still being detoured.
A detour set up by the North Carolina Department of Transportation directs drivers to take a right turn onto Taylor Road. Instead, many drivers are turning left onto Mill Road.
It's causing traffic issues in an otherwise quiet area.
"I've seen a lot of heavy traffic," says Deborah Jones of Mill Road. "I've seen cars go around this corner, you can hear their wheels squealing and everything else. One day we had a car come flying through here and took out one of those signs."
Bridge construction had a scheduled completion date of October 2013. Now that date has been moved to February 2014.
Project engineers say weather and safety reviews have delayed construction. The project is reported to be 90% complete.
