A man vacationing with his family from Ohio has died after rescuing his two children at the beach.
Emerald Isle police say 39-year-old Andy Clegg of Columbus, Ohio noticed his 9 & 11 year old sons having trouble in the water Sunday afternoon. They say Clegg was able to get both boys to the shore, but then he began having complications.
The man's father-in-law pulled him to shore and then a bystander started CPR. It happened in the 700 block of Ocean Drive around 3:35 p.m.
Police say Clegg was first taken to Carteret General Hospital in critical condition, and then transferred to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern where he died Monday morning.
Authorities say a preliminary finding shows the man died from a cardiac event.
It's the second water-related death at Emerald Isle so far this summer. Last month a foreign exchange student drowned while swimming at another section of the beach.
