Weldon murder suspect arrested in NYC

The Halifax County sheriff's Office says a suspect wanted for a fatal shooting in Weldon in August that led to a retaliation shooting that killed a 2-year-old, has been arrested in New York City.

The sheriff's office says 18-year-old Teddy Anderson Jr. was apprehended Thursday afternoon.

He was charged in the August 4th murder of 15-year-old Keyon Gardner and the attempted murder of two others. Another person had already been charged in the case.

The sheriff's office says following that shooting, four men shot through a bedroom window and killed Anderson's two-year-old niece Dy'uanna and injured her grandmother.

Those suspects have been arrested.

Anderson is currently being held in the Nassau County Correctional Center in New York awaiting extradition.

PREVIOUS STORY:

A month ago Thursday gunfire erupted in a small town, taking the life of a 2-year-old, a 15-year-old, critically injuring a grandmother, and hurting two others.

Weldon Police Chief Mark Macon said the shootings were intertwined, connected by violence and retaliation. Now a month later, with five people in custody, there is still one accused gunman on the run.

It was around 9:30 the night of August 4th when police said 15-year-old Keyeon Gardner was gunned down near 11th and Maple Streets in Weldon in Halifax County. Two other young men were shot there as well and have since been treated and released from the hospital.

Three hours later and less than a mile away, shots were fired through a bedroom window at 606 Cedar Street. Chief Macon said 2-year-old Dy'uanna Anderson was killed in that shooting while her grandmother, Catherine Price, was critically shot.

On the Thursday following the shootings, police said 19-year-old Semaj Clanton of Garysburg was arrested for Gardner's murder.

A week later, and the day after Dy'uanna's funeral, officers said they arrested four young men in connection to her death:

- Jamonte Moody, 19, of Roanoke Rapids
- Semaj Short, 17, of Roanoke Rapids
- William Cook, 21-years-old of Roanoke Rapids
- Victor Mallory, 21-years-old of Weldon

Police named 18-year-old Teddy Anderson Jr., the slain toddler's uncle, as the second gunman in Gardner's murder.

Police are still searching for the accused gunman. Anyone who knows where Anderson Jr. is, is asked to call Weldon Police at (252) 536-3136.
