A local man is dead after authorities say he wrecked his motorcycle.
According to the Department of Public Safety, 68-year-old Richard Baldwin of Oriental was taking part in the CCHC Foundation's Journey of Hope Cancer Support Center motorcycle ride, which left New Bern Saturday morning and went east on Aurora Road.
As the group approached the Beaufort County line, officials say Baldwin traveled into the west bound travel lane and began to pass the other riders of the event who were traveling east bound. Baldwin then left the side of the road, struck a ditch bank and overturned. Both the motorcycle and the man came to rest submerged in the water-filled ditch bank.
Troopers say speed was a factor in the crash. No other participants were injured.
