North Carolina Drivers May Be Able To Renew Licenses Online

The North Carolina House has passed legislation that would allow drivers to renew their licenses without standing in line at the Division of Motor Vehicles.

The bill passed Wednesday would allow people to renew their drivers' licenses online, by mail or by telephone, and would waive the requirement that they take a new picture or pass an exam at the DMV.

A license renewed remotely would expire four years after it is issued. To renew remotely, the person would need a valid drivers' license issued after they turned 18, and had the previous renewal occur in person.

Lawmakers said the bill will help the DMV handle a surge in license renewals that's predicted for the next two years, and makes the process easier and more convenient for residents.
