New Hands On Learning For Kinston Students

School officials were showing off the new state of the art STEM lab at Contentnea-Savannah K through 8 school in Kinston Wednesday.

STEM stands for stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The lab was funded by Golden Leaf Foundation, Spirit Aerosystems, DEPS Security Systems and STEM East -- and aims to prepare children for career tracks into community college -- and ultimately the workforce.

Mark Sorrells is the Senior Vice President at Golden Leaf Foundation and says, "We know that kids in the middle school--that's where they begin to make choices about the course of study that they take -- they either check in or check out of school -- we felt it very important to begin to get kids in rural communities in STEM classes -- hands on project based learning that they would see themselves being successful in science and math.

STEM East Executive Director Steve Hill, who played a role in getting the lab into Contentnea-Savannah, says local businesses have two choices when it comes to education: get involved or complain about it. Hill says many business leaders in the STEM East Region have opted to get involved.
