Mayor Lee Bettis returned to his mayoral duties Tuesday at a meeting of the New Bern Board of Aldermen.
Bettis announced in early May that he would take a two-month leave of absence after being charged with DWI and police were called to his house for a reported domestic situation within three days.
Bettis was arrested on a Monday morning for driving while impaired in Havelock. Bettis said he blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer test but failed a field sobriety test. He said a recent hip surgery caused him to fail the test. A blood sample was taken and sent to Raleigh for analysis. It could be months before the test is run and the results known. He's due in court July 18.
A few days after the DWI arrest, Carteret County deputies were called to the mayor's rental home for what was reported as a domestic altercation.
Deputies say Nicole Bettis reported an altercation with her husband at the home. Deputies say the mayor's wife reported she did not suffer any injuries and deputies did not see any visible signs of assault. They say she declined to prosecute her husband for assault.
