New Bern Elementary Students Get Cultural Lesson Celebrating Chinese New Year

J.T. Barber Elementary School in New Bern celebrated a traditional Chinese New Year Friday for the 7th straight year.

Preschoolers hosted activities and led the parade down the main hallway while other students sat and cheered them on. The traditional dragon and many handmade masks are just part of the customs celebrated during the Chinese New Year.

Many students were in the color red- a sign of strength in the Chinese culture. Principal Kathy Barber says its an important day for all students.

"It helps them make connections to their native land as well as helps other students learn about their traditions," said Barber.

Friday was not the actual start of the Chinese New Year. It's actually February 10th. According to the Chinese calendar, this is the year of the snake.
