Neighbors React To Heroin Bust In Greenville

Neighbors are reacting to a major drug bust in their Greenville neighborhood where the Pitt County Sheriff's Office seized 3,600 units of heroin worth $70,000 from a man who they say was selling it out of his home.

The Pitt County Sheriff's Office arrested 34-year-old Maurice Whichard and charged him with trafficking heroin, possession with intent to sell and distribute heroin, and possession with intent to sell and distribute heroin within 1,000 feet of a school.

Neighbors like Johnnie Walker are in shock. Walker says, "I've been here three years. Three years and two months and i didn't know nothing like this was going on."

While Walker says he's concerned that something like this could happen so close to his home, it could be happening near yours as well.

Pitt County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Christy Wallace says heroin drug busts are becoming more common. Wallace says, "We've been seeing an increase in heroin use, specifically because of the increase in prescription drug use. They are made from the same opiate and they give you the same effect."

The sheriff's office says the investigation continues.
