The SafeWise Report released its "50 Safest Cities in North Carolina" report this week. To compile the report, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime data from 2012 to analyze and rank the cities.
Winterville in Pitt County ranked fifth on the list.
The report looked at crimes from part one of the FBI Unified Crime Report reported crime data, which focuses on violent crimes such as aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery. The data also considers property crimes including arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft.
SafeWise then calculates the chances of these crimes happening out of a thousand in order to level the playing field for cities of varying populations.
