NC, US Legislative Openings A Topic For Lawmakers

Lawmakers come and go from North Carolina's General Assembly and congressional delegation. Now some elected leaders wonder whether it's time to change how to replace those who resign midterm or die in office.

The legislature directed an oversight committee this year to examine rules for filling vacancies in the U.S. House and within their own body. They're supposed to report back by early next year, potentially with recommendations.

The study will occur the same year a special election will be held to fill out the two-year term of U.S. Rep. Mel Watt. His office says he plans to resign Monday and become the chief of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

For General Assembly vacancies, local party leaders choose a nominee the governor is obligated to appoint.
