Marines Gearing Up For Deployment Off Libyan Coast

Thousands of Marines from Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point and New River are preparing to head to waters off Libya.

Nearly 2,200 Marines and sailors with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit are preparing the ships they will be deploying with during their mission to the Mediterranean Sea. The USS Bataan is currently docked at the Morehead City State Port.

The 22nd MEU will relieve the 26th MEU which has been involved with Libyan air strikes and with the rescue mission of a downed Air Force pilot last week.

Colonel Eric Steidl, commander of the 22nd MEU, would not say if they will have any missions in Libya but the colonel says the 22nd MEU has the ability to perform a wide variety of missions.

The 22nd MEU is deploying three months earlier than originally scheduled because the 26th MEU left North Carolina waters early to help with flood relief efforts in Pakistan.

What is this "We" stuff. Washington the government is not we it is them. They (Washington politicians) are bulling small countries not me or I. Let the politicians go first then send their children and grandchildren. This is insanity. The founding fathers like Jefferson and Washington would be ashamed of this kind of action. Garland

How do you think the Marines are getting there? The Navy, onboard a Naval Ship, along with a whole lot of sailors. Are you not aware that the Marines and Navy are affiliated? There is no branch of the military above another, they are all there to do a job. God bless all the men and women that are out there, doing what very few other Americans are willing to do. It's not a very popular opinion I know, but I prefer to SUPPORT our troops, our country and our President, rather than complain or critisize the powers that be. Do any of you out there think you could do the job better? It's easy to sit back and be an armchair politician, and say we should do this, the President should do that. We the all knowing people think we know everything about everything, when in reality, you all know very little about nothing. This is a great country, one of the things that make this a great country is the fact that we have "freedom of speech", opinions can be heard, however lately it seems to me that those opinions are more times hurtful and mostly detrimental to the defenders of our country. God Bless America!

I understand that the boots are not on Libyan ground. We are sending support. If we are only sending "support," why not send the army or navy? The MARINES are our superior warriors.......the Battle Elite. God, please be with all our military and keep them in your loving hands.

To those of you saying that these deployed Marines are going over just to do Obama's work in Libya, You are not very familiar with the Marines and how the MEU's work. For the past several decades, we have always had Marines on ships floating around the Med. Sea ready to deploy and serve if necessary. In my Marine Corps career, I have been involved in 7 deployments in this region. Each one lasted about Six and a half months. We called these "floats". Based out of Camp Lejeune, the 22nd, the 24th, and the 26th Marine Expeditionary Units rotate deployments. The MEU's are made up of an infantry battalion, tanks, artillery, a helicopter/Harrier mixed squadron and other assists needed to be successful in just about any combat scenario. Please support our troops, they only do the work assigned by Obama, a member of the Brotherhood of Islam.

well, let's see. he urged Mubarak out. certainly to the benefit of the MB. Now we're involved in Libya, urging the removal of Kadaffi (or however you spell it) fighting with admitted al queda and MB affiliates. some even going as far to say they were fighting the US in afghanistan. you ask for proof, which you'll never get. i ask you to read between the lines and quit letting others do your thinking for you.

Guys and Gals, I support the marine whole heartedly...I am a solders son of the lifer. My family has been called to duty many time over the years, so I know. My only worry about this action is who are the rebels? I read it is the insurgents from Iraq and Al Queda. If this goes the way Beck has shown, based on video and transcript from liberal/terrorists....it is concerning. Are all the middle east countries rising up...yes...are we to come to the aid of all of them? I don't know. Thin is thin...is there a reason or purpose? Whatever the purpose...Israel hangs in the balance and they will defend their country at some point. Just look who surrounds them...the Muslim Brotherhood...Sheria law...sorry ladies no school or being seen in public and the new second class citizen. Learn about it. The US battles with gay behavior...Sheria demands torture nad death. We now live in a dangerous time where thugs are in power in the US and taking over other countries. God bless our troops and send them home to their kids, god save America!

I knew it, now YOU are the son of the lifer?Your family have been called to duty many times over the years? Is this the same family that actually found the Weapons of Mass Destruction, when no one else could? Why is it,every subject, you have first hand experience on it. To add to the saga, now you are quoting that lunatic Beck again. Your creditability sucks.

Proud to be a Devil Pup. 2200 plus Marines and sailors certainly will be able to "encourage Kadafi to step down." And while you're at it would you please take care of Iraq, Afganistan, Japan and the flooding in Pakistan. Whew...what a day. Proud of the USMC...Semper Fi!

U.S.S.Bataan. Northrop Grumman. Lots of good money to be made supplying the military with the tools of the trade. Getting this rig underway to Lybia must cost a pretty penny . . . Oh well. Print more money. Keeps the shipyard workers and the USMC in a job. All good.
