As people in the northeast continue to pick up the pieces after Hurricane Sandy, some local Marines returned Sunday night after helping the cause.
More than 300 Marines and Sailors of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit went to New York City from November 1st to November 11th to provide disaster relief to the area.
Marines we spoke with say the devastation was more than they could have ever imagined.
Colonel Matthew St. Clair says on the positive side, the disaster brought those impacted closer together. "If somebody got done cleaning out their house then they were helping their neighbors. Or, if their neighbor's damage was worse than the damage on their house, well then they would go help their neighbor. So the community bonded, and I don't know if all communities would've done that.
St. Clair says this mission was unique because they were helping fellow Americans. He says it's not something they get to do very often, but they took great pride in the opportunity.
