Man Cited For Shooting Pitt County Black Bear

Deputies said a local man is now facing a citation after poaching a black bear out of season.

Pitt County deputies, along with Wildlife Resource Commission officers, said they got a call of shots fired near Poplar Grove Drive in Pitt County around 7 p.m. Monday.

Investigators said they combed the area, to find a black bear had been killed.

Deputies said they waited for the poacher to return, and once he did that man was cited.

Wildlife officers said the hunter, whose name has not yet been released, is cited for taking a black bear during an unlawful time of day and possession of a black bear taken unlawfully.

The hunter is facing more than $5,000 in fines and fees, according to Wildlife Officer Cain.

Officers said it is illegal in North Carolina to hunt bear at night, and the season for bear is now closed.

The recent open bear season for Pitt County was November 11th - 16th, and runs again December 16th - 28th.

Wildlife officers said they encourage people to call in local law enforcement when they suspect there may be illegal poaching or hunting in their area.
