Man Charged With DWI In Craven County Crash That Killed Woman, Injured Man On Moped

A man is charged with DWI and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after a crash that killed a woman and seriously injured a man in Craven County Thursday morning.

It happened on Highway 55 near Bridgeton about 11:45 a.m.

Officials say 25-year-old Elizabeth Edwards of New Bern was riding on a moped with 32-year-old Justin Avery of New Bern when a Ford Explorer driven by 33-year-old Tony Sawyer Jr. of New Bern rear-ended the moped.

Edwards was pronounced dead at Carolina East Medical Center. Avery was taken there as well but as of 5 p.m. was being transferred to Vidant Medical Center for treatment.

Sawyer was locked up under a $25,000 bond.
