Lenoir Memorial Holds Public Meeting About Future

A local hospital held a meeting Tuesday morning to answer questions about the future of the facility.

Three hospital systems want to either purchase or partner with Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston.

Vidant Health, Duke Lifepoint, and Novant Health have each handed over proposals to the Kinston hospital's board.

Vidant Proposal

*Membership subscription: Vidant pays $25 million plus $60 million in capital improvements and takes full financial responsibility

*Joint venture: Vidant pays $20 million for 80% of the hospital and commits $60 million in capital improvements for the first 10 years

Duke LifePoint Healthcare

*Full acquisition: Maintain local Board of Trustees and hire all employees with standard employee screenings

*Joint venture: LMH would maintain 50% of governing board

Novant Health

*Management agreement that provides LMH with additional operating and clinical support

*Hospital retains full local governance

The hospital, which has seen recent cutbacks and layoffs, announced in December it has hired an advisory firm to help find a partner for the hospital.

CEO Gary Black says it is possible for a decision by the fall, but that is very fluid because LMH may accept other proposals.

He said the next round of talks would be be with the three hospital systems to discuss specifics, such as employees and added services.

Black says initially 23 hospital companies gave interest, but only three made formal proposals.
