Sheriff Chris Hill in Lenoir County said even after a man was hit over the head with a hammer during a home invasion, he still fought back.

Hill said at 2:25 a.m., deputies were called to 1819 Water Chestnut Drive for a home invasion.

The victims, 64-year-old David O'Neal and his wife Susan, told investigators two masked men came inside while the couple was asleep.

Investigators say that David O'Neal was hit in the head with a hammer by one of the men when he confronted them. O'Neal's wife was pushed down to the floor and attacked with scissors.

We're told that David O'Neal fought with a table leg that broke off while he was struggling with one of the attackers.

David hit Susan's attacker with it while he held the scissors over her in the bedroom. Susan said, " He said you better get out of here, you better get out of here. And that's exactly what he did. My husband saved my life last night."

David said, "If God weren't in this house last night, we would not have been here today. I honestly believe that by the way they were acting. They acted like they were crazy."

Detectives are currently conducting a neighborhood canvas.
Officials say they are looking for 2 men in their late 20s, wearing dark hoodies, and dark colored sweatshirts. The suspects sustained injuries during the invasion.
