A Camp Lejeune Marine who laid down his life in Afghanistan was honored on base Tuesday with the Navy Cross.
Base officials said Gunnery Sergeant Jonathan Gifford, a Florida native, was stationed at Camp Lejeune when he was deployed to Afghanistan.
He was part of a special operations task force when the group was confronted by insurgents. Marines said the gunnery sergeant's actions saved the lives of his partners, adding that he fought until he was mortally wounded.
Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General John Paxton Jr. presented Gifford's family with the Navy Cross for his actions back in 2012.
