Individual Health Care Mandate Expected To Be Delayed By 6 Weeks

The Department of Health and Human Services is intending to push back the deadline for individuals to be required to buy health insurance by several weeks.

As the law currently stands, people need to start the application process by February 15-th in order to avoid a tax penalty.

However, the White House is telling NBC News that it intends to slide the deadline by as much as six weeks.

As a result, individuals would have to start the enrollment process by March 31-st to avoid paying the penalty.

The move comes as experts are trying to fix the technical glitches that are plaguing healthcare-dot-gov.

It remains unknown at this point if Congress would need to pass legislation in order for the change to go into effect, or if HHS could do it administratively.
