ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Icy weather in western North Carolina snapped tree limbs and cut the electricity to two colleges.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that electric utilities reported approximately 10,000 people were without power early Tuesday afternoon.
Power was reported out at Warren Wilson College during the morning along with areas near the college east of Asheville. A power outage also forced Montreat College to delay the start of classes.
Many local school systems operated on delayed starts as a result of the weather.
Portions of southeastern North Carolina had been on the alert for isolated thunderstorms, but National Weather Service meteorologist Jonathan Blaes said the threat diminished late in the day.
Steady rain fell on much of the rest of the state. Wilmington set a record for the date with 1.62 inches.
