Highway 33 Bridge In Beaufort County Closed For Next 8 Months

A detour expected to last more than eight months has begun in Beaufort County.

The Department of Transportation is replacing the bridge on Highway 33 in Chocowinity over the Norfolk Southern Railway near the intersection with Highway 17. The DOT says the bridge is expected to open October 31st, but construction won't be complete until April of next year. The nearly $4.2 million project will replace the bridge built in 1935.

Below is the list of detours drivers will need to take to get around the bridge.

N.C. 33 East towards Chocowinity:
- N.C. 33 to Taylor Road to Fredrick Road to U.S. 17 South to U.S. 17 North to U.S. 17 Business back to NC 33.

N.C. 33 East towards Aurora:
- N.C. 33 to Taylor Road to Fredrick Road to U.S. 17 South to U.S. 17 North to Exit 176 back to NC 33.

N.C. 33 West:
- N.C. 33 to U.S. 17 Business to U.S. 17 South to Fredrick Road to Taylor Road back to N.C. 33.
