Highway 12 On OBX Could Open By Christmas

The NC DOT hopes to give Outer Banks visitors and residents a new Highway 12 for Christmas after major damage from Hurricane Sandy.

This weekend crews brought in 495 truckloads of sand from Avon to fill sandbags, build up dunes and help rebuild the road. As of Sunday night, crews placed more than 450 of 18-hundred sandbags needed to create a barrier between the ocean and Highway 12.

The DOT hopes to open the newly paved Highway 12 by December 25th.

Travel between Hatteras Island and the mainland right now is by 4-wheel vehicles only through checkpoints on Pea Island and at Mirlo Beach.

The DOT has a new website where you can find updates. Just click the attached link for that site.
