NEW INFO: Gunman Surrenders At Drug Store Near Charlotte

A gunman has surrendered after releasing three people he held hostage in a drugstore in North Carolina after a robbery attempt.

Belmont Police Sgt. John Wilson said Friday morning that the gunman surrendered several hours after releasing three people who were in the store when he tried to rob it.

The man's name hasn't been released and there was no immediate word on the charges he would face.

Officers were called to the store shortly before 2 a.m. and exchanged gunfire with the man before realizing there were hostages in the store. Wilson says the hostages were released about two hours later and negotiations continued with the gunman.

Wilson says no injuries have been reported.

Police in North Carolina say an attempted armed robbery turned into a hostage situation at a drug store.

Police in Belmont were called to the CVS store shortly before 2 a.m. Friday. Police Chief Charles Franklin said there also was a report of shots fired and a hostage situation.

Three people were released from the store around 4 a.m. Police say the gunman is still inside the store.

Streets in the area have been blocked off. Officers from several departments are at the scene, including the Gastonia SWAT team.

Belmont Sgt. John Wilson says no injuries have been reported.

Belmont is about 15 miles west of Charlotte.
