Crews have started construction on a $53 million expansion at a local hospital.
Carteret General Hospital has planned a groundbreaking ceremony for Friday.
Hospital President Dick Brvenik says the three-story addition will add 112,000 square feet and will be home to a new state-of-the-art cancer center.
Brvenik says, "The expansion reflects a response to community needs. We've tried to listen closely to our patients and their families. I know that our board and all the medical staff and the community are behind this, and have tried to make sure they have the best design to serve those patients for years to come."
Hospital officials say the expansion will be paid for through financial reserves and not tax dollars. Hundreds of donors have donated millions of dollars for the cancer center.
The groundbreaking is Friday at 2 p.m. in front of Carteret General Hospital.
