Greenville Community Meeting Tuesday To Discuss Recent Violence

After last week's homicide in Greenville, 2 city council members organized a community safety awareness meeting for 6:00 p.m. Tuesday night at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church in Greenville. Meanwhile, police told us they would spend the week after the fatal shooting stepping up patrols and looking out for suspicious activity in the area. Neighbors say the department is making good on its promise.

A mobile police unit is parked at the intersection of Westpointe Drive and Westridge Court in Greenville near the scene of the murder of 36-year-old Anthony Johnson. Officers told us Friday they planned to be there around the clock for the next week or two. One resident we spoke to Monday says the neighborhood is finally being restored thanks to the increased police presence.

"Just before the violence, it was great. I had no concerns, but with the recent violence... and i think they had a drug problem over here recently and everything and seeing the police in the area. Since that time it's been a good feeling," said Westpointe Resident John Edwards.

Greenville City Council members Kandie Smith and Dennis Mitchell. organized the community meeting for Tuesday night. They plan to have police, the mayor, and a representative of the district attorney's office available to take questions and listen to concerns about recent violence.
