Great White Spotted off MA Coast Ahead Of Labor Day Weekend

(NBC News) Swimmers squeezing out the last bit of beach weather were back in the water in Duxbury, Massachusetts Tuesday, a day after a Great White shark was spotted just off the shore.

Most seemed unfazed by the toothy visitor who forced swimmers out of the water for a few hours before heading for deeper depths.

State police in a helicopter spotted the shark Monday afternoon about 150 yards off the coast.

They quickly closed the beach.

Police estimate it was ten to 15 feet long.

Last week, four other Great Whites were seen off the coast of Cape Cod, about 40 miles south of Duxbury.

There have been at least 12 shark sightings near Massachusetts beaches this summer.

Scientists with the Department of Fisheries say a rebounding gray seal population might be the reason sharks are being spotted closer to shore.
