GOP Leaders Tackle Redistricting

A court hearing considering motions over a pair of lawsuits challenging the district boundaries approved in 2011 was slated to resume Tuesday in a Raleigh courtroom.

Lawyers for Democratic voters and advocacy groups spent nearly five hours Monday explaining to three judges why the maps are unconstitutional, diminish black voter influence and should be thrown out. Now the other side gets to defend the lines and explain why they should be used through the 2020 elections.

Critics of the maps say the GOP went too far creating so many majority-black districts. Mapmakers say redistricting rules required them.
