We all make New Year's resolutions. By February, many of us have failed. Melonie Bryan of Pitt County is still going strong as she continues her goal of getting fit.
Bryan retired last year as Pitt County's Chief Financial Officer.
In January, Bryan decided it was time to get her act together, so she went on a diet and signed up for the "Couch to 5K Class."
The program started in Greenville back in February. Twice a week, anywhere from 30 to 50 members would meet and train for the recreation and parks 5K in May.
But for Bryan, this was much bigger than a race. "I just decided if I wanted to be here for another 20-30 years, I needed to be healthy while I was doing it."
After three months, Bryan had already lost 45 pounds and was ready for the 5K that she successfully completed on May 11th.
Now Bryan is working on her next goal. To lose a total of 50 pounds by June and perhaps 60 by July.
Bryan also says since January her blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar numbers have all dropped.
Greenville Recreation and Parks plans to start another "Couch to 5K" program in the fall.
